Election Protection Rally in Logan Square - Chicago - July 10th 2021
Exhorted to "Take Action", concerned citizens gathered in Logan Square on Saturday afternoon, demanding passage of legislation to protect the right to vote, and help to ensure the survival of our democratic system. Sponsored by the grassroots organizers of Indivisible Chicago, as well as ACLU Illinois, Activate:Chi and many other activist groups, a parade of speakers called on the US Congress to pass the "For the People Act", and if necessary, abolish the filibuster in the process.
Speakers included legal commentators, Renato Mariotti and Jill Wine-Banks; state and federal legislators including congresswoman Marie Newman and State Senator Robert Peters, also two musician activists. Chicago great Jon Langford, belted out his "Plenty Tough and Union Made". South sider Melody Angel lifted the crowd with "Give the Power to the People".
"The fight is long" stressed Angel as she ended her two song set, "It's not about one day. It's about coming out every day. Step up! We need votes!"
I hope more people do step up. Our democracy is at stake.
