Tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg in Chicago's Federal Plaza - 9/27/20
"Illinois Handmaids Tribute to R.B.G." was held on Sunday at noon in Federal Plaza. Flanked by protestors garbed in the disturbing red habits from the televised version of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, speaker after speaker praised the memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, decried the President's choice to replace her, warned that women's reproductive rights in the US are hanging by a slender tread, and exhorted the onlookers to "Vote, if you want to keep control of your body!". After passages from Atwood's prescient 1985 novel were read aloud, Illinois State Senator Melinda Bush cried out "A dystopian reality is what we're living through now! Please vote! And don't stop fighting!" "Solidarity is not enough" said another speaker, "We need to act, we need to vote!"
