Rally to Support the Chicago Police at 16th District HQ on July 8th, 2021

"Support the Police Rally" at 16th District CPD headquarters on the far Northwest Side, an area where a large number of Chicago police officers make their homes.

Three local aldermen led the rally; Nicholas Sposato of the 38th ward, Anthony Napolitano of the 41st ward and Jim Gardner of the 45th ward. After playing a recording of the Star-Spangled Banner (the Whitney Houston version from the 1991 Super Bowl in Tampa), the trio expressed their high regard for the men and women of the Chicago Police Department. "Let the policemen know we have their backs on the Northwest Side!" proclaimed Alderman Napolitano in a pink "Support Your Local Police" tee shirt.

Some disappointment at the rally's turnout was also noted. At a similar demonstration last summer, in the wake of the George Floyd protests, upwards of 2000 people crowded the sidewalk along this busy stretch of Milwaukee Avenue. Thursday evening the assembled group numbered less than 200. "I guess people are scared off by a couple of clouds", explained Alderman Sposato, referring to some possibility of rain in the grey skies overhead. No rain fell, at least not while I was there.

Dedicated police backers who did brave the elements, waved signs and shouted their support at the passing motorists, with some squad cars flashing their blue lights in acknowledgement.
